The second with NightCap.

Rather remarkable differences and enough to get me to pay for the application if I hadn't managed to nab it whilst it was free.

Those of you that have known me for a while know that I decided on the iPhone when I was looking to get a smartphone based on my liking of the Hipstamatic camera application.

Almost two years down the track, I'm still chuffed with my decision and still in love with the Hipstamatic. I change my preferred film and lens from time-to-time but my favourite camera remains the same.

Current preferred film is Ina's 1969 and preferred lens is Melodie: the images in this post were shot with same.

Tue, 03 Apr 2012 20:54:00 -0700 HDR http://you.rantz.me/hdr http://you.rantz.me/hdr

I have two HDR applications installed: TrueHDR and HDR Fusion. I often use them to merge two images that I've created from an original source image instead of the purpose for which they wee intended.

In this example, I've shot one of my favourite subjects (corners), left one as it was and created a high-contrast black and white.

The original image is the first in the slideshow.

The black and white edit is the second.

The merge from True HDR is third.

The merge from HDR Fusion is last.

Whilst similar, the results are not identical. I'm not sure which of these I prefer. Often, I'll use both applications to create an image and one of them immediately leaps out as the preferred.

Not this time.

Decim8-icn-175
The decim8 application is one of the most used application on Roger (it also gets used on Waltzin', though not as often).  It distorts, adds glitches, tortures your colours: everything that you might want in your toollkit to make an everyday perfect image into something a little more artistic.

To get it for your device(s), open up the 'App' store and search for 'decim8'.  It's worthe few bucks you will pay for it, and from time-to-time, it's cheaper. IIRC, I got it free.

I have used it to turn this:

Gone

Into this

Saturday Sky

Your kilometerage (mileage) will vary.

You can find more examples in the decim8 Flickr group.

I've abandoned, mostly, my usual soc.net platforms for Google+: I'll most likely go back to others at some point, but for now I'm keen on continuing the explorations that I've begun on G+.  The image above is a screen capture of the main screen on Roger (that's me iPhone, remember...).

Here are a few useful links for you that may assist in your exploration of G+:

If you're not on G+ as yet, please let me know and I'll send you an invite - I've plenty left.

Fri, 08 Apr 2011 23:12:00 -0700 Multiples http://you.rantz.me/multiples http://you.rantz.me/multiples

I regularly use two applications to create  double-exposures:

  • DoubleExp (or DXP) - created for just that purpose; and
  • TrueHDR - created for making HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos.

For the examples in this post, I use two images:

A dark image

And a light image:

Using DXP on HalfMix:

And using TrueHDR:

I enjoy the randomness that comes in when using TrueHDR for making double-exposures.

I create the above Olden Days images entirely with Roger* using the standard iPhone camera, PS Express and Pic Grunger.

The image below is SOOC - Straight Out Of Camera

Olden Days Tutorial - SOOC

I then lighten the image and up the saturation using PS Express:

Olden Days Tutorial - Lighten, Saturate

Add a border in same:

Olden Days Tutorial - Border

And then I open up the result in Pic Grunger and randomly select an effect and a style and set strength to about 23:

Olden Days Tutorial - Pic Grunger 1

And repeat with another effect and style, to end with:

Olden Days Tutorial - Pic Grunger 2

Easy peasy.

Enjoy.

Tue, 09 Nov 2010 21:50:00 -0800 EYE'EM http://you.rantz.me/eyeem http://you.rantz.me/eyeem

My introduction to EYE'EM was shortly after Roger popped out of the box and I entered five of my Roger's very first shots into a competition and I ended up making on to the shortlist*.  As per the EYE'EM post of 3 Nov 2010, the application for the iPhone is now available.  My experience of the  application to date is that it is adequate for uploading via Roger to the interwebz - though using the email option once you've registered at the site is far easier.

The EYE'EM site itself, however, is another kettle of fish - a beautiful interface to view images shot and edited with mobiles of all sorts. EYE'EM has now opened up from those involved in the first exhibition to allow others to participate: you can apply to join via this link.  I still user flckr for most of my photography but it is rather handy to have a place just for the mobile shots.

Wed, 06 Oct 2010 01:53:00 -0700 The History of Cameras http://you.rantz.me/the-history-of-cameras http://you.rantz.me/the-history-of-cameras

The slideshow above is of images made with an application called 'The History of Cameras'.  It's a non-paid (yes... *free*) application with a brief paragraph or two discussing a history of camera.  I noticed the application somewhere on Twitte, installed and had a look.  I was surprised - pleasantly - that the application makes photographs similar to what they would be if you used the equipment/media discussed.  There are twelve examples/steps/advancement allup and I'll certainly be keeping this little gem on my phone for the photographs it can make alone.  The stages/examples/advancements/examples are: First Exposure, Daguerreotype, Calotype, Dry Plate, Photographic Film, 35mm Film, TLR, SLR, Instant Camera, Zoom Lens, Digital Camera and ending with Camera Phone.

What's next...
