I've abandoned, mostly, my usual soc.net platforms for Google+: I'll most likely go back to others at some point, but for now I'm keen on continuing the explorations that I've begun on G+.  The image above is a screen capture of the main screen on Roger (that's me iPhone, remember...).

Here are a few useful links for you that may assist in your exploration of G+:

If you're not on G+ as yet, please let me know and I'll send you an invite - I've plenty left.

I regularly use two applications to create  double-exposures:

  • DoubleExp (or DXP) - created for just that purpose; and
  • TrueHDR - created for making HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos.

For the examples in this post, I use two images:

A dark image

And a light image:

Using DXP on HalfMix:

And using TrueHDR:

I enjoy the randomness that comes in when using TrueHDR for making double-exposures.

Tue, 28 Dec 2010 00:09:00 -0800 Olden Days Tutorial http://you.rantz.me/olden-days-tutorial http://you.rantz.me/olden-days-tutorial

I create the above Olden Days images entirely with Roger* using the standard iPhone camera, PS Express and Pic Grunger.

The image below is SOOC - Straight Out Of Camera

Olden Days Tutorial - SOOC

I then lighten the image and up the saturation using PS Express:

Olden Days Tutorial - Lighten, Saturate

Add a border in same:

Olden Days Tutorial - Border

And then I open up the result in Pic Grunger and randomly select an effect and a style and set strength to about 23:

Olden Days Tutorial - Pic Grunger 1

And repeat with another effect and style, to end with:

Olden Days Tutorial - Pic Grunger 2

Easy peasy.

Enjoy.

Tue, 09 Nov 2010 21:50:00 -0800 EYE'EM http://you.rantz.me/eyeem http://you.rantz.me/eyeem

My introduction to EYE'EM was shortly after Roger popped out of the box and I entered five of my Roger's very first shots into a competition and I ended up making on to the shortlist*.  As per the EYE'EM post of 3 Nov 2010, the application for the iPhone is now available.  My experience of the  application to date is that it is adequate for uploading via Roger to the interwebz - though using the email option once you've registered at the site is far easier.

The EYE'EM site itself, however, is another kettle of fish - a beautiful interface to view images shot and edited with mobiles of all sorts. EYE'EM has now opened up from those involved in the first exhibition to allow others to participate: you can apply to join via this link.  I still user flckr for most of my photography but it is rather handy to have a place just for the mobile shots.

Wed, 06 Oct 2010 01:53:00 -0700 The History of Cameras http://you.rantz.me/the-history-of-cameras http://you.rantz.me/the-history-of-cameras

The slideshow above is of images made with an application called 'The History of Cameras'.  It's a non-paid (yes... *free*) application with a brief paragraph or two discussing a history of camera.  I noticed the application somewhere on Twitte, installed and had a look.  I was surprised - pleasantly - that the application makes photographs similar to what they would be if you used the equipment/media discussed.  There are twelve examples/steps/advancement allup and I'll certainly be keeping this little gem on my phone for the photographs it can make alone.  The stages/examples/advancements/examples are: First Exposure, Daguerreotype, Calotype, Dry Plate, Photographic Film, 35mm Film, TLR, SLR, Instant Camera, Zoom Lens, Digital Camera and ending with Camera Phone.

What's next...

Thu, 09 Sep 2010 20:16:00 -0700 Autostitch http://you.rantz.me/autostitch http://you.rantz.me/autostitch

I've been using Autostitch for over two years now and the iPhone version was one of the first purchased (just after the Hipstamatic, of course) in the days after getting my iPhone.

I've made more than a few iPhoneoramas to date using the iPhone version, but this is my first 360:

iPhoneorama

I've been wanting to do a pano of the hoist with the 23, the peg bag and the vine for sometime - the big camera was just too awkward to get in there.  The iPhone on a tripod was perfect for getting right where I wanted to be.  There are a few stitching errors and you notice them in the interactive version (below) more.  The hoist, 23, the peg beg and the vine - *awesome*.

Grand application, this Autostitch - I'd suggest getting in on every platform possible. If you're really keen to make panoramas, you could also get AutoPano (non-free) on your big computers.

This pano looks rather sweet on SPi-V (requires shockwave) and I'll work on a flash version this weekend.

Fri, 03 Sep 2010 23:44:00 -0700 Lenses http://you.rantz.me/27292226 http://you.rantz.me/27292226

I noted sometime back that Lenses was free (for now) over on Twitter so downloaded it.  It's a camera applcation after all.  I've hesitated to upgrade the iPhone to iOS4 as I've been paying way too much attention to the problems associated with said upgrades.  After taking nearly a week to first get the iPhone to sync with my desktop, I'm incredibly hesitant to attach it to same for upgrade. This has been a good thing as the Lenses application - when I first installed it - was not available if you had iOS4.  So I did a 'Before' shot:

Before iOS4.0.2

And once I upgraded the iPhone to iOS4(.0.2), I had to take an "After":

After iOS4.0.2

I'm rather pleased the application still works and now I'll have to explore the variety of lens effects possible - I've only used the mirror one thus far.

Tue, 31 Aug 2010 19:11:00 -0700 Vintage - iPhone Camera Series http://you.rantz.me/vintage-iphone-camera-series http://you.rantz.me/vintage-iphone-camera-series

Vintage

The above teptraptych was manipulated using the GIMP but shot using the four applications available from Vintiphone. After the Hipstamatic and the standard iPhone camera, these are the cameras that I use the most. They are easy to use - you aim, shoot and then process the image with each of the single-purpose applications. At the time of posting, these applications were free.

I'd suggesting visiting the Vintiphone site and clicking through to the iTunes store and getting all four - you will find them most useful.

Sat, 21 Aug 2010 02:51:00 -0700 Hello World http://you.rantz.me/hello-world http://you.rantz.me/hello-world

Being a fan of the Hipstatmatic, it is only natural that my Hello World posterous would be about same, yes?

The Hipstamatic is my favourite camera.  It is a beautiful piece of work and it is almost impossible (for me, at least) to shoot an image I don't like.

If you're an iPhone addict (or an iPhone addict in the making, as I was), this is the camera you must have. The Hipstamatic application is based on the Hipstamatic camera - a camera that I would love to have in my kit.

I liked what I saw using this camera before I even had an iPhone and now that I've had the iPhone for over three months, I'm definitely glad that I choose to get a new phone based on a photography application that looked grand at first glance.
